I'm an
Individual
The Global Youth Village (http://....org), a residential, international leadership camp in Virginia's Blue Ridge foothills, is seeking a chef or sous chef for a temporary, full time position for our whole foods, vegetarian kitchen. (The Global Youth Village is a project of Legacy International.) June 18 - July 24, 2018. THE PLACE Since 1979, a dynamic environment is created that emphasizes experiential learning and challenges young people to turn cross-cultural theory into practical action. This year 50 teens and staff from around the world will participate. Everyone experiences conflict; what one chooses to do with it is the key. In GYV’s Dialogue Workshop teens learn practical peace-building skills and how to respond productively to conflict and prejudice. They learn how to lead discussions and have constructive conversations with people holding differing viewpoints. They gain tools to deal with strong emotions – their own and others, while developing listening skills, and mastering cross-cultural communications. The Dialogue Workshop, coupled with cultural programming, sports and arts, set within the cooperative living environment of this residential camp help participants learn to respect differences and discover similarities that transcend cultural, religious, and political barriers. DINING AT GYV Home-style meals with international flares are a key part of creating the international atmosphere at GYV. Food is not only viewed as a source of physical nourishment, but as a means of expressing culture. Legacy's vegetarian kitchen serves three meals daily to approximately 70 people, using mostly unprocessed vegetables and fruits, and whole grains, accented by fresh herbs from our organic gardens. THE JOB The Village is seeking an experienced chef or sous chef who is inspired by the goals and philosophy of Legacy International & GYV. This person manages overall meal production during one shift, preparing balanced meals that appeal to (while also "stretching") the teenage palate! Dates: June 18 through July 25, 2018 (Dates include staff orientation and wrap-up.) Qualifications: • Experience as a chef, sous chef, cook or assistant cook in a professional setting • Experience in vegetarian cooking preferred • Ability to work well with others in a close team work setting • Ability to delegate and train less experienced staff • Ability to prepare foods for special needs groups (vegans, people with food allergies, diabetes, etc.) as needed • Knowledge of health and safety standards of food preparation and serving, kitchen and sanitation procedures • Desire and ability to work in a rural, camp setting. (Yes, there is internet, running hot water and a solid roof over your head!) SALARY & BENEFITS: Housing, meals (for those not living within a easy commute) and modest salary. Salaries begin at $350/wk (negotiable) DETAILS: http://....org/) HOW TO APPLY Please visit our web site to read more and see if GYV is the right place for you to lend your talents and inspiration this summer!
